Interview with Christopher Hart Cartoonist and Author of How to Draw Dogs & Cats is very happy to share with you today an interview with Christopher Hart. Hart is an expert cartoonist and the author of many cartoon books. His latest cartoon book will certainly appeal to cat lovers, and people who love dogs too! ‘How to Draw Dogs & Cats’ show you step-by-step how to draw different cat and dog breeds.

Christopher Hart is the leading author of how-to-draw books. His books cover a wide range of topics, from animals to figure drawing and anime. His books have sold over 7 million copies and have been translated into 20 languages.

Whether you are brand new to drawing or are more experienced, we think you are really going to like this book! Personally, I have about 10 of Mr. Hart’s cartoon books and started drawing after not doing so since my college years (twenty years ago). One of the best things about his books is that he gives terrific step-by-step directions. Not only could I draw his cartoons, but my Mom who does not have the hobby of drawing, also was able to draw one of his cartoons when I pointed it out in the book for her to try. So if you’ve always wanted to draw Siamese cats or the type of dog your family has, this is a great book to get!

Here is our interview with Christopher Hart!

PurrfectCatNames: Your latest cartooning book is ‘How to Draw Dogs & Cats.’ What inspired
you to create a book on this topic? Do you have a pet or just like dogs & cats? Did you have a dog or cat as a child?

Christopher Hart: I’ve had pets all of my life. Besides being wonderful companions – friends, really – they’re also great inspiration for coming up with cartoon characters. This book came about because I had an idea for a simplified process of drawing pets. Every cat and dog in this book begins with the same basic template. If you can draw one cat, you can draw them all, because the general construction is the same.  I also wanted to create a book that showed how to draw more than just popular breeds, but also rare breeds and mixed breeds.

PurrfectCatNames: One of the things I’ve always personally liked about your cartooning books
is that you give excellent, step-by-step directions to create a cartoon. Do you
have any recommendations, especially for those cat & dog lovers who may
be curious about wanting to draw cartoon animals but have never tried it?
How can a “newbie” to cartooning get great results?

Christopher Hart: That’s a great question. My suggestion for beginners is to get everything worked out in the rough stage before you start in on the details. Most people finish a drawing before they’ve worked out the kinks, and if it doesn’t look right, they resist changing it because they’ve already done a lot of work on it. But if you get all of your changes done in the beginning, your final drawing is likely to come out much better.

PurrfectCatNames: In your book, you have instructions to draw different cat & dog breeds, such as
a Siamese or a Persian cat, or a poodle or a dachshund. What makes a cat or dog breed
distinctive from one another?

Christopher Hart: Yes, among them is the Siamese cat, American Bobtail, and Russian Blue, as well as a fun chapter on drawing kittens. There are also favorite dog breeds such as the Mini Schnauzer, Bernese Mountain Dog and Corgi, among many others.

PurrfectCatNames: Does your book have templates to show people how to draw kittens? If so,
what makes kittens different from drawing a mature cat?

Christopher Hart: Yes – the proportions are different on kittens than they are on adult cats. The head is bigger relative to the size of the body. The ears appear oversized, but the tail is undersized. And the legs are on the short side, so that its body is closer to the ground.

PurrfectCatNames: How did you originally draw the cats & dogs? Did you go to look at animals
or view veterinary science books? Or something else?

Christopher Hart: To learn to draw animals, I would go with my sketchpad to the zoo. Most four legged animals have hips, shoulders and limbs that are arranged pretty much alike. But they are arranged quite differently from those of humans. Most beginning artists, for example, cannot identity where the shoulder or elbow is on a dog. This book breaks down the construction into easy to follow steps.

PurrfectCatNames: You are an experienced cartoonist. What first inspired you to start drawing & why did you decide to choose drawing cartoons?

Christopher Hart: I think it was Walt Disney. Disney cartoons filled me with awe and wonder. I found out that by drawing cartoons, you could create a happy mood – for the characters and for yourself.

PurrfectCatNames: People who pick up your ‘How to Draw Dogs & Cats’ book may be encouraged to draw their own pet, dog, cat or another type of animal. If you are new to drawing, what do you
recommend someone do or notice first to get good results to sketch or cartoon style draw
their pet?

Christopher Hart: Every animal has at least one feature that stands out more than the others, even if by only a little. Perhaps your cat is very fluffy, or has amazing eyes, or you have a dog with a long snout. Emphasize that aspect of your pet, and it will help to identify it. Also, try to add a a touch of personality. If the dog has a sleepy look, emphasize the heavy eyelids.

PurrfectCatNames: What was the most fun or interesting thing about creating this book? Did it teach
you something new about cats or dogs?

Christopher Hart: Yes, it was interesting to see just how varied the coats are on different breeds of cats.

PurrfectCatNames: You have many cartooning books! If someone loves to draw cats, dogs & other animals, which other books of yours would you recommend giving a try?

Christopher Hart: I would recommend “Young Artist Draw Animals.”

PurrfectCatNames: What is next for you?

Christopher Hart: I’ve pretty much always got a new project in the works.
